Subject: Hurricane Katrina Recovery – Update #123
Posted: July 30, 2010
We have just been advised that a supplemental
appropriations bill has been passed by the U.S.
Congress and signed into law. The bill provides an
additional $5.2 billion to replenish FEMA’s Disaster
Relief Fund. Funds for permanent building repair and
mitigation proposals and for building content claims
have been unavailable since early February of this
year. Two of our major projects for repair and
mitigation have been held in Washington, DC until
new funds were made available. We have asked that
the CSRB and MEB projects be some of the first to
receive funds (over $34.5 million) from the new
appropriation.
The project to make permanent repairs and
complete the hazard mitigation project at the
Clinical Education Building has been advertised by
the Office of Facility Planning and Control. The key
component of the project is the construction of an
elevated enclosure that will house the critical
mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment that
was destroyed by Katrina flood waters in the
basement. We also anticipate that the roof
replacement project for the CEB will be advertised
in the near future.
The 1st Floor call buttons for Elevators 1, 2,
and 3 in the Allied Health/Nursing Building were
installed, the elevators passed inspection and were
returned to service. The contractor demolished the
old electrical panel D1A on the 1st Floor and a new
electrical panel was installed on the 2nd Floor.
Electricians began rewiring the electrical panels in
the 1st Floor electrical room and continue to
install conduit for the light fixtures in the 1st
Floor. The fire panel has been relocated to the 2nd
Floor. Existing concrete pads were removed to make
room for the new fire pumps on the 2nd Floor. Crews
have begun removing the heating hot water pumps from
the 2nd Floor mechanical room. Sheetrock, wall studs
and ceilings have been removed from Rooms 218 and
219.
The electrical contractor completed installing
the new electrical duct bank in the main driveway of
the Student Residence Hall. Their workers continue
to install electrical conduit in the 1st Floor B
Tower electrical room. The concrete forms were
removed from the new elevated enclosure and the
precast concrete wall panels have been delivered to
the site. Workers began roughing in the plumbing and
the electrical services for the 2nd level of
enclosure.
The general contractor at the Resource Center
removed the CMU shaft wall for Elevators 1 and 2 on
the 1st Floor and installed the formwork for the
elevators. They have installed CMU shaft walls for
both elevators on the 1st Floor. Workers have also
installed receptacles and lights in the elevator
pits. The 2nd raised platform for an air handling
unit was installed on the 1st Floor and the
mechanical contractor continues to set the elevated
AHUs in place. A new junction box was installed in
the 2nd Floor ATS room. The contractor began
penetrating the roof deck for the electrical conduit
that will serve the roof mounted emergency
generator. The electrical contractor continues
running new conduit on the 8th Floor.
The A/V contractor continued installing equipment
in the large and small conference rooms on the 8th
Floor of the Lions/LSU Clinic Building. They core
drilled to provide cable access for the podium in
the large conference room and ran power and conduit
to the floor penetration. The contractor roughed in
and installed the emergency light fixtures and began
installing the crash rails. Facility Services
installed the sink in the break room.
The contractor completed applying the markings to
the new Dental School patient parking lot. They
built the concrete forms for the connecting
sidewalks and curbs and poured the concrete. Crews
demolished the old sidewalks and the existing
driveway, excavated for the new driveway, and
removed debris and graded the perimeter of the lot.
The sub-base for the new driveway was spread and
compacted. The concrete forms for the new driveway
and sidewalks were constructed and the concrete for
the sidewalks was poured. The contractor built the
forms and poured concrete for the curbing along all
of the new sidewalks.
