Subject: Hurricane Katrina Recovery – Update #158
Posted: January 13, 2012

Due to the recent holiday period, this update covers a four week period from Monday, December 19, 2011 through Friday, January 13, 2012.

A project to repair the newly acquired parking lot along Gravier Street between South Roman Street and Debigny Street has been completed.  The new lot is an expansion of the existing 440 Student Lot and adds 75 parking places.  It can be accessed by using the 440 Student Lot entrance on Perdido Street and entering near the Derbigny Street exit gate.   The new lot opened to vehicular traffic at 8:00 am on Monday, January 9, 2012.

The contractor responsible for the permanent repairs and mitigation at the Clinical Education Building continued to install electrical conduit on the 3rd level of the new MEP building.  Storm drain pipe was installed on the 2nd level of the structure and fire proofing material is being applied to the structural steel.  Crews started working in the elevator pits 1, 2, and 3.

The CSRB exhaust upgrade contractor is installing the exhaust ductwork for phase 2B of the project.  All twenty-two (22) exhaust fan VFDs were put into operation and workers started to program the control system for EF-9 (the BSL-3 lab).  Crews began painting the existing exhaust fan plenums and sealed the new exhaust ductwork installed as part of phase 2B.

The project to replace the air handling units that serve the Dental School’s Clinic and Administration Buildings continues.  The contractor installed conduit and wire for the VFDs associated with units 2A, 7B, and 7D in the Clinic Building.  They finished installing the heating hot water lines for unit 2A and the chilled water lines for unit 2B.  The chilled water lines for unit 2B were pressure tested.  Workers continued installing the new ductwork and VAVs for unit 2B and the new ductwork is being insulated.

The concrete pad for the (new) unit 4A was poured while workers continued insulating the ductwork and heating hot water lines for unit 4B.  The ceiling in the 4th Floor Men’s restroom has been installed and the contractor began removing the ceiling grid and lights for unit 4B.

Workers removed the ceiling grid and lights for units 7B and 7C in the Clinic Building. The contractor continued installing the VAVs and insulating the new ductwork for units 7B and 7C.  The flex transitions for units 7B and 7C were installed. The spiral duct for unit 7C was installed and pressure tested.  The installation of the heating hot water lines for unit 7B continued and the concrete pad for unit 7B was poured.  The installation of the Clinic Building controls continues.  Workers insulated the A-side chilled water riser in the Clinic Building and the insulation was removed from the B-side chilled water riser.

Crews continued to insulate the chilled water and heating hot water lines for units L2B and L3B in the Administration Building.  The ceilings in the Library work room and the hallways of the 2nd Floor of the Administration Building are being installed.  The contractor installed control wires for unit L2B in the Administration Building.

The initial phase of construction of the new Human Development Center is getting underway.  The contractor setup the jobsite trailer, removed top soil from the site and laid three large (temporary) limestone driveways.  The pile driving rig that will be used for the test pile program was set up and test piles were delivered to the site. Test piles have been driven, the loading steel has been installed on the test piles and the load test is underway.

The $2M project to return food service to the Dental campus has started.  In addition to addressing the Hurricane Katrina damage on the 1st Floor of the Administration Building it will add a coffee kiosk and a large lounge/study area along the lines of the Resource Center’s Library Commons that will be accessible to students 24/7.

The contractor began by removing the existing stone veneer from walls and constructing a temporary entrance to the building near the horseshoe.  The plaster wall and the CMU wall for the old telecom room in the basement were demolished. The contractor laid out the floor pattern for the terrazzo flooring and removed old and damaged terrazzo.  Primer was applied to the areas where the old terrazzo was removed and the break metal is being installed along the curves of the new terrazzo flooring.  The CMU wall of Room 1104 (the service area of the old bookstore) was demolished and hot water supply and return lines were capped.  New HVAC duct hangers are being installed throughout the 1st Floor of the Administration Building and workers began installing the HVAC duct in the kitchen area.  Valves for the domestic hot & cold water were installed in the basement.
