New LibKey Nomad feature: E-Book linking!

We’re happy to announce new functionality for the LibKey Nomad browser extension. Not only does this magical tool easily link you to the full text of articles, it now quickly brings you to the Library’s available ebooks!

The Library has access to tens of thousands of ebooks, but it’s sometimes difficult to get to them. A book may be listed on a publisher’s site and it’s not showing you can read it, but we have access to it in another place. Or, you’re browsing Amazon and find a book you want to read, but can’t find a good way to see if the Library has it. LibKey Nomad now makes finding our ebooks extremely easy.

Look for the new View E-Book icon that will bring you to that book:

Here’s an example of where this new feature is of great help:

You’re on ScienceDirect and are trying to read the 7th edition of Abernathy’s Surgical Secrets, but cannot see any of the content of the ebook. However, since you have LibKey Nomad installed, you’ll see the icon at the bottom to View E-Book:

When you click on the View E-Book icon, some magic happens and you’re brought to ClinicalKey, where the Library does have access to this book!

However, there is one more thing you will need to do: there is a bug in the system now that doesn’t transfer your login information to ClinicalKey. However, there is another icon that will display where you will just need to click it to reload the page and you will be authenticated and will be able to read the ebook:

And this is all just that easy!

We have another example where this new feature will be helpful:

You’re looking around in Amazon and come across Dr. Porche’s Epidemiology for the Advanced Practice Nurse: A Population Health Approach. You have LibKey Nomad installed, and you see the View E-Book icon and know that will get you to where the Library has access to the book:

You also know that when you click that icon, you’ll need to also click the log in icon on the next page in order to read the book online:

Student Breakfasts – September 19 & 20, 2024

The Libraries are pleased to host student breakfast at both the Isché and Dental Libraries this week!

The Isché Library breakfast will be on Thursday, September 19th from 7:30-10am. And the Dental Library breakfast will be on Friday, September 20th from 7:30-10am.

There will be refreshments and swag! Hope to see you there.

EZproxy system maintenance September 13-14, 2024

September 12, 2024: On Friday, September 13, 2024, starting at 11pm until Saturday, September 14, 2024, 11am EZproxy will be undergoing maintenance. You will be unable to log in to any resources when following one of our links from the Library’s webpages, catalog, or link resolver products.

You can, however, access the resources that support logging in directly using OpenAthens during this maintenance. A list of resources that support direct login is available under OpenAthens-native resources: https://libguides.lsuhsc.edu/openathens/resources.

Campus Closure 9/11/2024 & 9/12/2024

*Update* 5:12pm the LSUHSC Campus will also be closed on Thursday, September 12th. Stay safe!

The LSUHSC Campus will be closed on Wednesday, September 11th in anticipation of Hurricane Francine. The Libraries will be closed this day. Monitor campus information sources to learn whether or not we will reopen on Thursday, September 12th or Friday, September 13th.

The CINAHL class scheduled for tomorrow will be rescheduled for a future date.

Library Classes Offered In September!

The Libraries will offer two classes in September. The first class is Intro to CINAHL on Wednesday, September 11th at 12PM. Join us in person in room 405 in the Isché Library, or join via Zoom.

The second class is PubMed Searching: Tips and Tricks on Wednesday, September 25th at 12PM. Join us in person in room 405 in the Isché Library, or join via Zoom.

Issues when logging into My EBSCO account

September 6, 2024: We’ve had reports and other libraries are confirming that users are encountering problems when trying to log into a My EBSCO account after following a Library link to EBSCO resources and databases, such as the Discovery search box, CINAHL, and Academic Search Complete.

If you follow a link from the Library to any of these resources and attempt to log into your My EBSCO account, you may encounter a 400 error or something similar. Please try one of the following if you encounter this issue:

• Try to access the resource and your My EBSCO account in Chrome
• Use this link to access the EBSCO resource: https://go.openathens.net/redirector/lsuhsc.edu?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebscohost.com%2F ; you should then be able to log into your My EBSCO account

Library holiday schedule for Labor Day

August 30, 2024: The Isché Library downtown will be closed Saturday, August 31, 2024; Sunday, September 1, 2024; and Monday, September 2, 2024, for Labor Day. It will reopen Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 7:30am.

The Dental Library will be closed Sunday, September 1, 2024, and Monday, September 2, 2024, for Labor Day. It will reopen on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 8am.

All online resources are available via the Library’s website during the holiday.

How to access Library resources on and off campus class, Wednesday, August 21, 2024

August 21, 2024: On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at noon, we will be offering a class on how to access Library resources on and off campus. You will learn about where to look for books, journals, and databases, as well as how to log in.

The class will be held in person in Room 405 of the Resource Center (enter through the Library), or online via Zoom (registration required).

We offer two classes each month, and you can learn more about our previous and upcoming offerings here.

Isché Library WiFi Equipment Updated

On July 25th we received a suggestion that we upgrade the WiFi in the Isché Library. The equipment was on the list for our IT department to replace as it was nearing end of life. IT sent out a staff person to walk through and do a survey of signal strength on all three floors and took note of all issues.

Today, August 14, 2024, all equipment has been replaced and some equipment has been shifted for better coverage. This was an accelerated timeline for IT to complete but they made their best effort to get this up before the Fall semester is fully in session.

August Faculty Publications

A new selection of articles has been added to the Faculty Publications display in the Isché Library. These eight articles, as well as all the articles in LSU Health Digital Scholar, are authored by at least one member of our research community here at LSUHSC-New Orleans. Each month the Library is proud to present copies of eight of these publications in a rotating display of 16. Check out the display below:

LSUHSC Digital Scholar is an institutional repository and is a service of the LSU Health Science Center Libraries. Research and scholarly output included here has been selected and deposited by the Libraries, as well as individual university departments and centers on campus. 

Publications cited in LSU Health Digital Scholar are harvested from a variety of sources, such as PubMed, SCOPUS, and CINAHL, to name a few. In addition to articles, they include books, book chapters, papers, editorials, letters to the editor, and meeting abstracts, all authored by at least one member of the LSUHSC-NO community. You can access LSU Health Digital Scholar at https://digitalscholar.lsuhsc.edu/.

Return of Regular Hours

The Isché Library returns to its regular hours, Thursday, August 1st. The Library is open from 7:30am to 11pm Monday-Thursday, 7:30am to 6pm on Friday, 9:30am to 6pm on Saturday, and 9:30am to 11pm on Sunday.

The Dental Library returned to regular hours on July 1st.
