New resource for Hispanic Heritage Month

Through the Library’s membership in the LOUIS Consortium, we now have perpetual access to the Hispanic Life in America database.

The Hispanic Life in America series from Readex provides comprehensive coverage of Hispanic American history, culture, and daily life. Series 1 covers 1704-1942, Spanish Colonialism through World War II. This collection also includes El Misisipí, the first Spanish-language newspaper in America, which started publication in New Orleans in 1808.

Our subscription provides access to:

  • Series 1: 1704-1942
    • Spanish Arrival to Texas Annexation (Beginning-1845)
    • Mexican-American War to Platt Agreement (1946-1901)
    • Cuban Independence to Mexican Revolution (1902-1920)
    • San Antonio Flood to Sleepy Lagoon Trial (1921-1942)

You can get to this resource by going to https://ezproxy.lsuhsc.edu/login?url=https://infoweb.newsbank.com/apps/news/easy-search?p=HLIAX. If you are off campus, logged into the LSUHSC-Secure wifi network, accessing via Citrix or the VPN, or in the new CALS building or in 1542, you will be asked to log in.

If you would like more information or need help with this or any other Library resources, contact us.

May 26, 2022 UPDATE: The problem has been fixed. You should now be able to access all Wiley journals both on and off campus. If you have any trouble, though, please let us know.

Original Post:

All Wiley journals are not easily available on campus or via any link that goes through EZproxy for off campus access. If you attempt to get the full text of any Wiley journal through any of these methods, you will be asked to log in or pay.

Logging in directly to Wiley Online Library using OpenAthens is a temporary workaround. Follow these steps to log in when off campus:

  • Click Login/Register on the right of the window
Screenshot of login screen
  • Then click Institutional Login
Screenshot of login screen
  • Click Sign in with your OpenAthens account
  • In the box to the right, type lsu and select LSU Health Sciences Center Library
  • You should see this screen where you enter your LSUHSC-NO full email address and current network password

If you are on campus, follow the same steps above, but the login screen will look like this where you enter just your LSUHSC-NO username (the first part of your email before the @lsuhsc.edu) and current password:

We will update as soon as we have more information about this problem, but if you need assistance with accessing these journals or with any other Library resources, please contact us.

Erroneous retraction indicators for Discovery/EDS Health

Due to ongoing preparations for the new version of the Discovery/EDS Health search, there is now a link to “View Retraction” for the majority of search results and on the full display of citations when using the Discovery service or the search box from the Library’s home page:

Please note: the referenced article has probably not been retracted. If you click the “View Retraction” link and the screen is blank, there is most likely no retraction applicable to that article.

The LibKey products can help in identifying retracted articles. Please see this post for the indicators when an article is retracted.

CALS building access to Library resources

Picture of building exterior

If you are moving to the CALS building, please note that there will be a change to how you access Library resources. Due to the network that is used in CALS, it will appear as if you are off campus.

For those moving from the MEB in particular, if you’re used to going to sites directly without using Library links to do so, you will run into trouble getting resources as your new connection will not be seen as being truly on campus.

To ensure you’re recognized by resource providers as publishers as having access, it is best to use the links we have to databases, books, and journals. Using our links makes sure you’re authenticated and will not run into paywalls along the way. You can find these links in a variety of places: the Library’s web site, the Library catalog, the E-Journals & E-Books A to Z List, and our databases list. If you’ve not authenticated, you will be asked to log in using either your LSUHSC-NO email, a Library-issued barcode, or your network username. More information about logging in can be found on our Off Campus LibGuide.

A handy tool to help you navigate the minefield of authentication and access is the LibKey Nomad browser extension. It displays quick links to articles along with prompting for authentication when needed. It can be used in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi browsers.

Another quick way to get to articles is the LibKey.io quick DOI and PMID lookup tool. All you need to do is plug in a PMID or DOI and let LibKey.io not only lead to the article, or options to get it, but it also ensures you’re signed in when needed. We have more information about this tool on our LibKey.io LibGuide.

We also have a LibGuide about accessing resources from CALS.

If you have any questions about this or any other Library resources, please contact us.

FIXED: ClinicalKey access problems

ORIGINAL POST August 5, 2022: If you are trying to access ClinicalKey using any link that has https://ezproxy.lsuhsc.edu/login?url= as the prefix, it is currently not working. This will affect all off campus access, as well as using ClinicalKey through the VPN, Citrix, or on campus when logged into the LSUHSC-Secure wireless network.

Until this problem is resolved, you can access ClinicalKey by:

Go to https://www.clinicalkey.com

Choose Login on the top right of the screen:
