SCC/MLA Librarian of the Year 2012
Today at its annual meeting the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association honored LSUHSC-New Orleans’ own Maureen “Molly” Knapp with its Librarian of the Year award.?á This award recognizes “outstanding contributions in health sciences librarianship.”?á Molly was recognized for the development and coordination of a national online training course for librarians, entitled “Get Mobilized!“?á For her efforts the South Central Chapter won Chapter Project of the Year at the annual meeting of the Medical Library Association in May in Seattle, WA.
The Isché Library will be closed on Saturday, October 13th due to a scheduled Entergy outage. The Library will reopen on Sunday, October 14th at 1:30 pm.
The Library Commons will most likely be unavailable during the outage which is scheduled from 7 am until approximately 3 pm on Saturday.
The LSUHSC School of Nursing has been awarded a $700,000 grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Health Resources and Services Administration. The grant will fund students who are pursuing degrees in the Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program. “Money can be used for tuition, books, fees, and reasonable living expenses,” according to the alert released by the Office of Information Services. Full-time students who meet eligibility requirements may receive up to $22,000 from the grant.
The latest issue of the LibraryÔÇÖs Newsletter has been released. Archives of the newsletter are also available from 1998 to the present.
The Centers for Disease Control offers a monthly Public Health Grand Rounds webcast.?á The Tuesday, September 18th broadcast (12-1 pm CDT) is entitled “Explaining the Unexplained: Discovering New Diseases Using Advanced Detection Tools.“?á It is possible to receive continuing education contact hours for participating.
Somehow in the summer doldrums, we missed that EBSCO was switching from Lexi-PALS to AHFS Consumer Medication Information. This free database (to EBSCO subscribers) is used to supplement health science databases.?á AHFS is an acronym for?á?áAmerican Hospital Formulary Service?« and is published by?áthe American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.?á?á It is updated monthly and information is available in both English and Spanish.

The Health and Psychosocial Instrument (HaPI) database is now available via EBSCOhost. HaPI is a bibliographic database which provides “information about behavioral measurement instruments. Information in the database is abstracted from hundreds of leading journals covering health sciences and psychosocial sciences. Additionally, instruments from Industrial/Organizational Behavior and Education are included.”
LSUHSC Libraries have had access to HaPI since the fall of 2001 via Ovid, but we switched suppliers on September 1st.
The Isché Library will be open limited hours (9 am – 5 pm) on Friday, August 31st and Saturday, September 1st and from 11:30 am to 8 pm on Sunday, September 2nd in the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac. The Library will be closed Monday, September 3rd in observance of Labor Day.
The Dental Library remains closed until Tuesday, September 4th at 8 am.

Because Isaac is lingering the campuses will remain closed until Tuesday, September 4th. The Libraries will reopen at 8 am. Be safe.
The LSUHSC Libraries?á will close today, Monday, August 27th at 5 pm for Isch?® and 4 pm for Dental?áand will remain closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 28th and 29th.?á There is a possibility of being closed on Thursday, August 30th as well, depending on flooding and power issues.?á The Library Commons will be closed as well.

During World War II, Theodore Geissel (better known as Dr. Seuss) joined the war effort doing what he did best, creating cartoons and educating. He was commissioned as a captain in the US Army. Perhaps those of us in South Louisiana should be taking his advice 70 years later with West Nile outbreaks making the news.?á Of course the Centers for Disease Control have released a feature with some more modern advice.
For those Library patrons still using Ovid and are accessing it from off-campus, an extra step seems to have appeared this morning.?á After login (with your LSUHSC userid and password), the Library’s Off Campus/WAM screen appears and asks for authentication. Users will need to be registered with the Libraries and know their Library barcode and PIN. Contact either the Dental or Isché Library Circulation Desks for assistance (504-941-8158 for Dental and 504-568-6100 for Isché) for assistance. Or authorized users can access Ovid via the VPN or Citrix.
We are working with Ovid to correct the issue.
If you’ve been watching the Olympics, you’ve noticed the tape on various athletes. Mostly it seems to be a relatively new product, Kinesio Tape.?á NPR News wrote a story on its efficacy earlier this week. The news article linked to a 2012?ástudy in Sports Medicine and?á a 2008 article in Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy; both are?áavailable to LSUHSC Library patrons.

PubMed Central has officially changed it’s name to PMC.?á The name shortening?áis to?á”to avoid confusion with PubMed.” For more information?áon the changes?áfor PMC, consult the current issue of the NLM Technical Bulletin.
“PMC is a free full-text archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature at the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine (NIH/NLM).”
Access to MDConsult now matches most of the Libraries’ other online resources. Instead of logging in, users on campus are validated by IP address. Off campus users will use the Libraries’ standard remote access method, WAM.

Patrons can then opt to create a personal account within MDConsult; a personal account allows for customization and other benefits.
New England Journal of Medicine has an article in this week’s issue about the history of Olympic Medicine.?á?á The LSUHSC Libraries own many of the historic articles listed in the article’s bibliography; check our online catalog for more information.
The article should be freely available to anyone, and not just LSUHSC patrons.
