Campuswide Book Club Discussion

The Book Club will gather on Monday, May 7^th from 12:15pm to 1:45pm in MEB Lecture Room 4 for a ÔÇ£brown bagÔÇØ discussion of the book and its relevance for the work we all do. A distinguished panel featuring Drs. Corey Hebert, Cassandra Youmans, and John Estrada will lead this important discussion.

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor, black tobacco farmer whose cellsÔÇötaken without her knowledge in 1951ÔÇöbecame one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and more. HenriettaÔÇÖs cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family canÔÇÖt afford health insurance.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (Broadway Paperbacks 2011), by Rebecca Skloot, is an enjoyable read that delves into issues of health care disparities and medical ethics. An award winning piece of non-fiction, this book was featured on over 60 criticsÔÇÖ best of the year lists and was awarded the 2010 Wellcome Trust Book Prize, the American Association for the Advancement of ScienceÔÇÖs Award for Excellence in Science Writing, the 2011 Audie Award for Best Nonfiction Audiobook, and a Medical JournalistsÔÇÖ Association Open Book Award.

Roman St. Garage Entrance

The following statement was issued on Thursday, March 8th?áby John Ball, Assoc. Vice Chancellor for Property & Facilities regarding weekend changes in the Roman Street Garage:

“From Friday, March 9th at 6:00 PM, until Monday, March 12th at 6:30 AM,
the left exit lane, closest to the booth in the Roman St. Garage, will
be closed to allow repair work to the drive surface.?á Faculty, students
and staff using the garage after 6:00 pm on Friday should enter the
garage using the regular weekday garage entrance that is closer to
Tulane Avenue.?á That entrance will remain open all weekend during these
repairs.”

Foundation Building to Begin

City Business reported yesterday that the LSU Health Foundation building (just north of the Resource Center Building) is set to begin construction soon. It will be construction site number 3 visible from the downtown Library’s windows.

Chocolate toothpaste developed by emeritus dental faculty

The Times-Picayune recently reported on a toothpaste based on a cocoa extract that was developed by LSU School of Dentistry professor emeritus Tetsuo Nakamoto.

Tetsuo Nakamoto, Chief Scientific Officer of Theodent and a professor emeritus at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, discovered the benefits of the cocoa extract years ago. He collaborated with researchers at Tulane University and the University of New Orleans to develop the find and create the toothpaste.

Theodent, as the toothpaste is called, costs $9.99 a tube and is available at Whole Foods. It does not contain fluoride.

Geaux Tigers!

LSUHSC New Orleans (which includes the Libraries) will be closing down at noon on Monday, January 9th, in honor of the LSU Tigers playing in the BCS Championship in the Superdome.

Tumor Registry 1st Place in Data Quality

The Louisiana Tumor Registry has been awarded 1st Place Data Quality Profile Award from the National Cancer Institute’s SEER program. The Louisiana Tumor Registry has been under the auspice of LSUHSC-NO since 1995; it has been a SEER program since 2001.

Dental Campus data/phone lines

The Dental Campus has been experiencing an outage of telephone & data lines since this morning. AT&T estimates the repair time as between 3-4 this afternoon.
*Edit* Service was restored at 2:30 pm.

Water outage Tues. PM (12/20)

There will be a domestic water outage at the Resource Center Building and S. Roman St. Garage this Tuesday, December 20th, from 10:00 PM till 2:00 AM. This outage is needed to cap a leaking waterline located in the University Medical Center construction site. During this outage there will be no hot or cold water in any of the restrooms or the lounges throughout either building.
