Celebrating the life of Susan Daniels

LSUHSC lost a piece of history earlier this year with the passing of Susan Daniels, the amazing woman who founded the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling in 1978.

Susan M. Daniels, Ph.D. died October 20 in Washington, DC. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, October 24, 1948, the daughter of the late Marie Ducote Daniels and Harry James Daniels, Sr.

Dr. Daniels was a graduate of St. MaryÔÇÖs Dominican High School, New Orleans (alumna of the year 2001), and Marquette University (summa cum laude). She received her Master’s Degree in Psychology from Mississippi State University (alumna of the year 1995), and her Doctorate in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She contracted polio as an infant and spent much of her early childhood in rehabilitation hospitals, including the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation. At her parents’ insistence, Dr. Daniels attended school with her siblings long before mainstreaming was commonplace.

NIH $9 Million Grant Awarded

Congratulations to School of Medicine faculty, Judd Shellito, who has been awarded approximately $9 million in grant funding to develop a vaccine against Pneumocystis.

Congratulations to Liz Strother, Associate Director for Dental Library Services, on her academic promotion to Professor/Librarian. Liz has worked long and hard to merit this most deserved promotion!

Liz has worked at LSUHSC for more than 30 years, she has more than 30 publications to her credit and has taught classes to dental students for many years. She has served the University in many ways and has been on more than 30 committees in service to professional organizations.

We, here in the library, are very proud of you, Liz!!

THC & HIV

Physiology Department Head, Patricia Molina has been awarded a $4 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health for the study of how cannabinoids produce subtle changes in gene activity that affect how a person responds to HIV infection. The award was announced via EurekaAlert and LSUHSC twitter feed.

As the Times-Picayune reported the grant “will study how marijuana components called cannabinoids produce changes in gene activity that affects the body’s response to the AIDS virus.” The award will be dispersed over five years.

Local Surgeons & the Oil Spill

WWL-TV featured a story on a couple of local surgeons, including LSUHSC’s own Kamran Khoobehi offering some ideas on how to stop the oil leak, using surgical techniques. Love the out of the box thinking!

Blood Pressure & Sugary Drinks

Liwei Chen, an LSUHSC School of Public Health faculty member is making news (WebMD, NPR, UPI, Reuters, and HealthDay News) because of her study on the connection between sugary drinks and blood pressure. The study (pdf) is in the “publish ahead of print” section of Circulation. The study was released as a EurekAlert by LSUHSC Information Services.
