Since the connection between the brain and the eye are still in developing stage, the extent is not known about how harmful it can be. Like most other things, moderation is recommended.

LSUHSC Assistant Professor Adrianne Brennan (Psychiatry) was interviewed in a Times-Picayue article that came out today; she stated “Because we were so bonded as a city through Katrina, we also bonded through the Saints. Our sense of community is so strong.”

Dr. Robert Brannon, professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, has received a tremendous accolade from the U.S. Air Force Office of the Surgeon General. Dr. Brannon, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel, and an internationally recognized expert in oral and maxillofacial pathology and forensic dentistry, has been appointed Civilian National Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology to the Air Force Surgeon General. This three-year appointment is equivalent to the rank of a one-star (brigadier) general. Dr. Brannon is only the third person to hold this position.
ÔÇ£This rare honor is a fitting tribute to someone recognized by his peers as a giant in the fields of oral and maxillofacial pathology and forensic dentistry,ÔÇØ said Dean Henry Gremillion.

Julie Schiavo, reference librarian at the LSU Dental School, has just been awarded an Express Outreach Grant for over $3,000 from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region. Julie’s grant, entitled “Outreach to the LSUHSC-NO School of Dentistry Clinic: Providing Quality Consumer Health Information to Dental Patients,” will provide consumer health computer stations to patients at the Dental clinic.

Once a year, New Orleans Magazine publishes a list of the Top Doctors in the greater New Orleans area; this list is compiled from a database created by Best Doctors in America. Congratulations to Drs. Janet Leigh and Michael O’Brian who were recently awarded two very prestigious national awards.
Janet Leigh, BDS, DMD, Chair of the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Dentistry, is one of ten Health Policy Fellows selected by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation?é?« (RWJF) for 2009-10. She is the first dentist to be selected since 1999. The award comes with a grant in the amount of $165,000 for the residential stay, travel, research, conferences, and other leadership development activities.
Michael E. O?óÔé¼ÔäóBrien DDS, JD, Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Predoctoral Studies in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Dentistry, has been selected as the recipient of the 2009 Daniel M. Laskin Award by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. The award recognizes the “Outstanding Predoctoral Educator in OMS” (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery).
The NOLA.com website just released a story on LSUHSC’s own Eduardo Davila. Dr. Davila, assistant professor pediatrics, has been awarded a $1.3 million grant over 5 years by the National Cancer Institute to study new immunotherapies, including a vaccine, for cancer.
