Winter Break Hours at the Libraries

Ische Library Associate – Award Winner

Congratulations to the Isché Library’s Circulation Associate, Amy Corder. Amy is currently a graduate student in the School of Library and Information Science in addition to working full-time with us.

The annual meeting of the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association is one of our biggest events of the year. We hold our advisory board meetings, exhibit, and sometimes offer continuing education. One of the highlights for us is being able to bring our Library Outreach Student Award winners with us to show them the ropes. In this three-week series, we’ve asked some of them to reflect on their experiences.

Thanks to the NNLM SCR Library Outreach Student Award, I was able to attend SCC/MLA’s 45th annual conference in San Antonio, TX.

Although I work as an associate in a health sciences library, I had no idea what to expect from a medical library conference. Luckily, the NNLM Regional Medical Library staff explained everything about what to expect at the conference beforehand so that I wasn’t completely lost, and they answered all of my questions.

Attending committee meetings was unexpectedly my favorite part of SCC. Two of the committee meetings I attended were the Continuing Education and Research committees, where I was able to get a glimpse into how each committee plans for the following year and all of the work that goes into preparing for the conference each year.

However, the Outreach Committee meeting was the highlight of my time at the conference. I was interested to hear all of the different outreach activities among medical libraries in our region and how NNLM supports them in their endeavors. I had no idea of how varied outreach efforts were in the medical library community, from providing health information training to public librarians, to attending health fairs locally, and conducting webinars.

It was very interesting to see the research trends that are developing within medical libraries and how medical librarians can help to move forward medical research and evidence-based medicine. Not to mention, the social events were an extremely fun way to network with other health information professionals!

I had a great time at SCC and would encourage other Library and Information Science students to attend. I left the conference feeling motivated about my career path and connected to the larger community of health sciences librarians.

Outbreak of E. coli Infections Linked to Romaine Lettuce

CDC is advising that U.S. consumers not eat any romaine lettuce, and retailers and restaurants not serve or sell any, until we learn more about the outbreak. This investigation is ongoing and the advice will be updated as more information is available.

Thanksgiving Hours

The Libraries will be closed Thursday-Saturday, November 22-24th of Thanksgiving week.

Both Libraries will close early on Wednesday, November 21st; the Isché Library will close at 6pm and the Dental Library will close at 5pm.

Both Libraries will reopen on Sunday, November 25th; the Isché Library will be open from 10am to 12 midnight and the Dental Library will be open from 11:30am to 8pm.

Isabel to be Discontinued

Unfortunately, due to lack of use and frequent technical difficulties, the Library will be discontinuing Isabel as of November 30, 2018. Working in conjunction with DynaMed, Isabel is a differential diagnosis tool. If you were one of the few who found it helpful, please contact one of our reference librarians to advise you on an alternative.

Dental School Closure 11/14

Due to a Power Outage, the Dental School will be closed for the rest of the day. All classes and appointments are cancelled.

Normal hours and operations will resume tomorrow.

INNOPAC downtime – complete

An upgrade of the INNOPAC system will happen beginning at 9am on Tuesday, November 13th. The outage is expected to last 2 hours at the most. The library catalog and related services will not work during the upgrade.

OpenAthens off-campus log in now available!

We are happy to announce that the Libraries now offer OpenAthens as an alternate way to get to resources when off-campus. With OpenAthens you can use your LSUHSC-NO e-mail address and current password to log in.

This new way to log in works with all Library resources. You will probably first see the option when going through a link from the Library’s web page or the Library catalog. The EZproxy log in page has changed to provide the ability to use OpenAthens:

From there you will see the LSU Health New Orleans log in page that you may be familiar with from webmail or Office 365:

Be sure to enter your complete LSUHSC-NO e-mail address (including the @lsuhsc.edu). Once you’ve done this, you will be logged into both the OpenAthens and EZproxy systems, so any Library link you follow that requires off-campus authentication should work with no trouble.

Another feature of OpenAthens is the ability to log in directly at a number of database, ebook, and journal sites. We’ve noticed that many of you have already discovered this option, but one thing to keep in mind is that not all publishers or sites support logging in through OpenAthens. We have a list of sites that support OpenAthens here.

If you have trouble using Library resources with OpenAthens, you may be having issues with your LSUHSC-NO password and/or account. You can use the LSUHSC-NO password change page or you may need to contact the Help Desk or your local computer supporter if you need more assistance with your account.

EZproxy is still available as a way to use Library resources. If you are affiliated with LSU Health New Orleans but are not assigned an LSUHSC-NO e-mail address, you may still be eligible for Library privileges. In those cases, you will need to use a Library-issued barcode and your PIN to use our resources.

More information about logging in off-campus is available via our new Off-Campus page: https://www.lsuhsc.edu/library/offcampus.aspx. There is also a new OpenAthens LibGuide that provides more information about this service: https://libguides.lsuhsc.edu/openathens.

For those who are in the hospitals and clinics, we understand that you deal with more hurdles than anyone, and OpenAthens may make your search for and use of resources a little easier. One example of this may be if you are having troubles accessing an article, it might be easier to log in at the journal’s site (if it supports OpenAthens) and get the article in a more direct way.

Vote!

  The Congressional Primary Election is coming up! Tomorrow, Tuesday November 6th,  voters will cast their ballot for 435 House (US House of Representatives) seats and 35 of 100 Senate (US senators) seats.

Louisiana citizens will be voting for Louisiana Secretary of State and all six Louisiana U.S. Congressional seats for the 116th Congress along with parish specific positions and issues.

Dental Library closure – Sunday, October 21st.

The dental library will be closed on Sunday, October 21st due to the scheduled AC shutdown.  All students are welcome to use the Isché Library on the downtown campus.  It is located on the third floor of the Resource Building, 433 Bolivar Street.
