Class on the New PubMed

The Library is hosting a class on the new PubMed!

The class will take place on Friday, February 7th from 10:30-11:30am in the Isché Library Computer Classroom (Room 405, Resource Center Building)

PubMed has recently introduced a new design that includes changes to its appearance and features. The Library class will teach you how to:

  • Activate the default filters or customize the filter menu.
  • Use the Results by Year graph to see trends in literature or refine your search results by publication year.
  • Use the Advanced search page to search for terms in a specific field, see the search details, review your search history and combine searched to create complex search strings.
  • Save your search results to a file, email your results to yourself or a colleague, or send your results to a clipboard, collection, or your NCBI My Bibliography.
  • Create an email alert.

Email Reference@lsuhsc.edu or call 504-568-6100 to register.

Drop-ins welcome!

For more information on the new PubMed, check out our recent blog posts.

In New PubMed: Cite Button

The new PubMed has added a “Cite” button, which provides citations in multiple formats. This feature allows you to quickly cite a single article for copying & pasting or downloading.

The “Cite” button is located in two places:

1. On the results page.

2. In the article record.

In New PubMed: Search Details

With the rollout of new PubMed, some features have changed – such as where to view search details. In old PubMed, the details of a search were displayed on the results page; in new PubMed, they are on the Advanced page. For more information, see the video below.

Libraries Closed for MLK Day

Both the Isché and Dental Libraries will be closed on Monday, January 20th for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The Libraries will be open regular hours over the weekend and on Tuesday.

The presentation will include:

  •  Locating materials and resources
  • Off campus access
  •  Additional tools and tips
  • LibKey Nomad
  • Current alert and point of care resources.

If you are interested in attending, but cannot make it in person, the 1:00-2:00 PM Session will be aired live VIA Zoom.

In New PubMed: Date Filter

In the updated PubMed, the publication date filter has been updated.
Old PubMed had a prepopulated, text-based filter, while the new PubMed has an adjustable bar graph showing number of publications/year in the results.

New PubMed (above) Publication Date filter is more responsive and findable compared to the same feature in old PubMed (below).

January Faculty Publications

A new selection of articles have been added to the Faculty Publications display in the Ische Library. These eight articles, as well as all of the articles in our Faculty Publications database, are authored by at least one member of our research community here at LSUHSC-New Orleans. In addition to articles they include books, book chapters, papers, editorials, letters to the editor, and meeting abstracts, all authored by at least one member of the LSUHSC-NO community. The database is maintained by Reference Librarian Kathy Kerdolff and is available to the general public here or via the Library’s webpage. In New PubMed: MeSH

Since new PubMed is here, you need to know about changes to the database, such as “how do I search subject headings now?”

In the new PubMed, the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Database can be found under the Explore column beneath the search box. The MeSH Database has not changed and still populates into Pubmed as before.

Ovid Access Changed

As of this morning, Ovid access (Medline, JBI, Books @ Ovid and Journals @ Ovid) has been changed. The new access point aligns it with all other databases to which the Libraries subscribe. Access off campus is via direct login to OpenAthens.

Saved searches under the old access method are not available. If saved searches are needed, contact Reference@lsuhsc.edu for more information.

Accessing Springer Protocols and journals

UPDATE: The problems should be fixed so Springer Protocols and journals should be available as usual via all Library links. If you run into one that is not or need any assistance, contact us.

We are currently experiencing problems accessing the Springer Protocols and all Springer journals both on campus and off campus through the Library’s EZproxy service (this would affect all links from Library pages and our Catalog).

If you need to access any Springer resources, you can do so using OpenAthens, but only when off campus. When you go to this page (https://link.springer.com/athens-shibboleth-login?previousUrl=https://link.springer.com/) under “Log in via Athens” find and select LSU Health Sciences Center. You will then need to enter your LSUHSC-NO e-mail and password, but once logged in you should be able to use all Springer resources to which the Library subscribes with no trouble.

We will update when we have more information, but if you need any help please do not hesitate to contact us.

New off campus login page

If you tried to log in today to any Library resources from off campus, you will hopefully have noticed that the page looks a little different:

Screenshot of page with login options

The link to log in via OpenAthens using your LSUHSC-NO e-mail and password is more prominent. If you would prefer to log in using your Library barcode and PIN, click the green bar to expand that option:

If you need help with changing your password, PIN, or anything else, click on the blue Help bar and various options for assistance will appear:

More information about off campus access can be found in a number of places. We have a page with information including a video to help, along with LibGuides about OpenAthens and off campus access. If you have any questions about this or any other Library services, please contact us.
