Dental Library Upgrade

The Dental Library has upgraded its security gate.

Because of the installation of this new gate, the double door entrance will now act as both the entrance and exit.

LexisNexis Academic is now Nexis Uni

Our access to LexisNexis Academic has been transitioned to the new Nexis Uni. This revamp features a new streamlined search and is geared to helping you find the trusted information you need much more easily.

The new search screen looks like this:

The content in Nexis Uni is similar to what was offered in LexisNexis Academic. You can search for news articles, business information, and a wealth of legal sources. Also included are many full-text journals,  covering a bevy of topics.

Another feature of Nexis Uni is an increased level of personalization. Once you create an account in Nexis Uni, you have the opportunity to customize your search screen, create alerts for new content, and can share your search information and collaborate with colleagues.

If you need more information about Nexis Uni or walkthroughs on its new features, this page can get you started.

Off-campus access to Nexis Uni requires a Library barcode and PIN. If you need help setting up your Library account or need any other help, please contact us.

In addition to articles they include books, book chapters, papers, editorials, letters to the editor, and meeting abstracts, all authored by at least one member of the LSUHSC-NO community. The database is maintained by Reference Librarian Kathy Kerdolff and is available to the general public here or via the Library’s webpage. For a PDF of a bibliography of this month’s additions, click here. If you have an article you would like us to highlight or if you have any questions regarding the display or the database, you can contact Kathy Kerdolff.
Please come to the Library and view these recent publications by our research community.

New England Journal of Medicine PDF Downloads

New England Journal of Medicine redesigned their website, and the “Download PDF” link has a new appearance. Instead of a link that says “Download PDF”, it is now represented by an arrow pointing down. The download arrow symbol is located on the left side of each article’s page.

Here’s where you need to look now:

ScienceDirect EBS Collection: French Health Sciences and German Medical

Parlez vous francais? Sprechen sie Deutsch? If you can understand those questions and can answer yes, then you may want to explore our last-but-not-least groups from the ScienceDirect EBS Collection.

The French Health Sciences category contains an array of medical topics, all in French.  You will find ebooks on physical therapy, anesthesia, cardiology, and more specialties, which will offer you a chance to hone your language skills while you glean knowledge about your chosen subject.

The same can be said of the category German Medical.  There seem to be quite a few books on orthopedics and psychiatry.  I’m just guessing though because I speak neither French nor German.  At any rate, you might want to take these categories for a spin and test your language skills.

This concludes the weekly spotlight on the ScienceDirect EBS Collection.  This varied group of ebooks will be available until June of this year.  At that time, we will be reviewing the usage of the collection and keeping the most used texts.  This is your opportunity to let us know what you want and need to be able to access.  By viewing a book you are voting for it.  And if there is a particular ebook in the collection you feel strongly about, let us know.  We appreciate your input about these ScienceDirect offerings!

Libraries are open!

Both Libraries and both campuses are open once again. Fingers crossed for no more freezing weather!

Campus Closure Extended Again

Both the downtown and the dental campuses will remain closed on Friday, January 19th. The rest of the weekend is a question mark, depending on water pressure.

If water pressure to our buildings improves, then the downtown library will open on Saturday and both libraries will reopen on Sunday.

*Edit* water pressure continues to be insufficient for plumbing use. The Libraries remain closed for the weekend.

Campus Closure Extended

Due to anticipated poor weather conditions. The entire campus will be shutting down at 3pm today. The Libraries and both the downtown and dental campuses will remain closed on Wednesday, January 17th. The Libraries plan to reopen on Thursday, January 18th at 8am. For the latest news consult: http://911.lsuhsc.edu/

Stay warm!

*Edit* Campus remains closed on Thursday, January 18th because of frozen streets. Current plan is to reopen on Friday.

Ische Circulation Desk phone

The main line for the Isché Library has been down since Sunday, January 14th. If you call, voicemail picks up. Please contact us on a different line or via chat or email. Sorry for the inconvenience.

*Edit* 10:10am Telephone access to 504-568-6100 has been restored.

ScienceDirect EBS Collection: Energy

This week we are highlighting the Energy category of the ScienceDirect EBS Collection.

At first glance there doesn’t seem to be too much of interest that would be applicable to our field here at LSUHSC.  But there are some gems that might interest the eco-minded researcher and chemist.  There are a wealth of ebooks on the subject of renewable energy, and some of the texts examining research in the petrochemical field may have health-related implications here in our neck of the woods.  So don’t write this category off.  You may find just what you need for that last piece of the puzzle.

Please take some time to review all of the categories in this valuable collection.  We will only have this opportunity until the end of June.  Then most of these selections will be disappearing.  After the review period, we will only be retaining those texts that receive the most hits.

Saturday’s Walk-to-Wellness Closure

On January 13th, between the hours of 6am – 9am, the Walk-to-Wellness will be closed in order to perform a high pressure test of the new water pipeline. Access to the Resource Center Building  will be possible through the first floor entrance. Access to the Lions/LSU Clinics Building, the Dr. Mervin L. Trail Clinical Sciences Research Building and Allied Health/ Nursing Buildings will be possible through the two 1st floor entrances of the Medical Education Building (Perdido side).

Martin Luther King, Jr Holiday

Both the Isché & Dental Libraries will be closed on Monday, January 15th in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr Day. Both Libraries will be open their regular hours on Sunday.

Sections of JoVE/Journal of Visualized Experiments now available

The Library is happy to announce we finally have subscriptions to six sections of JoVE/Journal of Visualized Experiments. This is one of our most-requested journals, and although we were unable to subscribe to the full journal, we hope the sections we are able to get will be of use.

You now have access to the following sections via a Library subscription both on- and off-campus:

One issue we would like to point out is indexing of JoVE in PubMed: all sections are handled as belonging to one journal, so please be sure the video you need belongs to one of the six sections above.

If you need any help with this or any other Library resources, please do not hesitate to contact us.
