Moving Downtown

Rita Premo, Dental Reference Librarian, since August 2013 has made the move downtown to fill the Reference position recently vacated by Jessica Brooks. Rita will continue to work at the Dental Library on Mondays, until a new librarian can be hired. She is now the liaison for the School of Allied Health Professions and School of Graduate Studies. Rita has been offering the Library Lunchtime Learning series downtown (and at the Dental Library) since the summer; topics have included: Predatory Publishers, PubMed Beyond the Basics, and Scientific Writing.

Jessica Brooks worked with the Libraries from March 2013 until last month; she has been on maternity leave since September.

FDA Sets New Standards for Labels

The FDA released a new rule yesterday regarding the labeling of prescriptions and biological products which affect pregnancy, lactation and reproduction.

From the press release: “The final rule replaces the current product letter categories – A, B, C, D and X – used to classify the risks of using prescription drugs during pregnancy with three detailed subsections that describe risks within the real-world context of caring for pregnant women who may need medication.”

The new rule will go into effect by June 20, 2015.

CDC & Healthy Holidays

The CDC wants us to have a Healthy Holiday season…so they posted a webpage and a podcast and three e-cards (1, 2, 3) and …a song, sung to the tune of the 12 Days of Christmas. (The song is also featured in card 1.)

Faculty Publications Spotlight for December

A new selection of articles has been added to the Faculty Publications display in the Ische Library. These eight articles, as well as all of the articles in our Faculty Publications database, are authored by at least one member of our research community here at LSUHSC-New Orleans. Each month the Library is proud to present copies of eight of these publications in a rotating display of 16. They can be viewed in the Reference area, on the wall between the main entrance and the Library elevator, on the third floor of the Resource Center Building.

ILLiad Maintenance Scheduled

The Libraries’ ILLiad service will be offline on Saturday, November 22nd from 1 am to approximately 3 am for routine maintenance.

Thanksgiving Week Hours

Both the Isché and Dental Libraries will be open their normal hours on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (11/23, 24 and 25) of Thanksgiving week.

On Wednesday, the Isché Library will close at 6 pm and the Dental Library will close at 5 pm. Both Libraries will remain closed from Thursday, November 27th through Saturday, November 29th.

The Libraries will reopen on Sunday, November 30th; Isché will reopen at 1:30 pm and Dental at 11:30 am.

PubMed problems resolved

UPDATE: The earlier problems accessing PubMed have been resolved. Please do not hesitate to let us know if you are still having troubles with this or any other Library resource.

We are currently experiencing problems accessing PubMed both on- and off-campus. In addition, the WebBridge Link Resolver is not working from PubMed, so you will not see links to articles when you check the availability from the citations.

If you wish to continue searching PubMed, you will need to check for the availability of articles by looking up the journal titles in the Library’s catalog, INNOPAC.

The link resolver is still working correctly in other databases that also search MEDLINE. You can search Ovid or MEDLINE through EBSCOhost, and you will see any available links to the articles in the citations when you click the “Check Full Text” link.

We will update as soon as we have more information. If you need any more information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The November Library Lunchtime Learning presentation—PubMed Beyond the Basics—is designed to help you get the most out of the premier biomedical citation database. Join us and learn how to more effectively and efficiently search PubMed using advanced features such as Medical Subject Headings, filters, index terms, and the Related Citations and Clinical Queries functions to more easily find the research you need. In addition, we’ll show you how to personalize your PubMed experience via MyNCBI, which will allow you to create bibliographies, automated searches, and separate collections.

The session will be held once at the Dental Campus and once Downtown. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to dentlib@lsuhsc.edu.  But remember, we always welcome drop-in attendees. We hope to see you there!

Happy International Open Access Week

Open Access logo

Open access to information—the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research and the right to use and re-use those results—has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted. It has direct and widespread implications for academia, medicine, science, industry, and for society as a whole. October 20-26 has been declared International Open Access Week, an opportunity for education and advocacy regarding the open sharing of information.
