Use PubMed? Then get LibKey Nomad!

It can be a struggle getting to articles when searching PubMed. Although we suggest you use our link to PubMed that turns on our link resolver, we know that’s not always the most convenient way. There is, however, a nifty little tool that makes getting articles in PubMed really easy.

LibKey Nomad is a handy browser plugin that enhances PubMed and brings the Library’s journal holdings to you. It is available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Vivaldi, and Brave browsers.

When installed, you will see PubMed come to life with new links to articles:

Screenshot of PubMed search results

You can get to articles directly from your search results, so no more clicking back and forth to view the abstract and then see if we have access to that article!

Installing LibKey Nomad is easy. Just start at https://libkeynomad.com and then choose your browser. Once you’ve installed it, search for LSU and then choose “LSU Health Sciences Center”:

Choose institution for LibKey Nomad.

Now you’re good to go and you’ll wonder how you ever searched PubMed without LibKey Nomad.

The benefits of LibKey Nomad are not exclusive to PubMed; if you search Scopus or Web of Science, this tool also works with those sites.

More information about setting up and using LibKey Nomad can be found on our LibGuide. However, if you need any information about this or any other Library resources please contact us.

Downtown Campus Closed 2/17

*Update 11am* The heat is still not on so campus is closed today. Hopefully it will be warmer and the heat will be on so we can open tomorrow, Thursday, February 18th.

Due to a power failure overnight (and a lack of heat) the downtown campus is delaying opening until 12 noon today. This includes the Isché Library. Stay warm!

Libraries closing at noon 2/15

The Libraries will close at noon on Monday, February 15th due to weather conditions.

The Libraries are also already scheduled to be closed on Tuesday, February 16th for Mardi Gras in an LSU System-mandated holiday.

Both Libraries will reopen on Wednesday, February 17th at 8am.

February Faculty Publications

A new selection of articles have been added to the Faculty Publications display in the Ische Library. These eight articles, as well as all of the articles in our Faculty Publications database, are authored by at least one member of our research community here at LSUHSC-New Orleans. Each month the Library is proud to present copies of eight of these publications in a rotating display of 16. With the currently changes, we’ve decided to post the publications digitally. Check out the display below:

Publications cited in the Faculty Publications database are harvested weekly from a variety of sources, such as PubMedSCOPUS, and CINAHL, to name a few. In addition to articles they include books, book chapters, papers, editorials, letters to the editor, and meeting abstracts, all authored by at least one member of the LSUHSC-NO community. The database is maintained by Reference Librarian Kathy Kerdolff and is available to the general public here or via the Library’s webpage. A PDF of a bibliography of this month’s additions will soon be available here. If you have an article you would like us to highlight or if you have any questions regarding the display or the database, you can contact Kathy Kerdolff.

Carnival Hours

With no parades happening this year, the Libraries will maintain their current hours, except that the Isché Library will close at 6pm on Lundi Gras (February 15th) at 6pm.

Both Libraries will be closed for Mardi Gras (February 16th), as this is a university holiday. Go eat some king cake and check out some House Floats and stay safe!

ProQuest email / export problem

If you use any of the ProQuest Databases (Nursing & Allied Health Database, Dissertations & Theses, etc.) off campus, you have probably encountered a problem when you attempt to export or email citations. Proquest requires you to complete a ReCAPTCHA challenge but it cannot be accomplished through our off campus access.

You must create a “My Research” account in ProQuest in order to email or export from the databases while off campus. Creating the account is very easy – only one step. You can even link your RefWorks account to your My Research account for even easier citation exports.

Isché 5th Floor – Emergency Plumbing Repair

An emergency plumbing repair is scheduled for Wednesday evening, February 10th. This will include cutting out a large cast iron pipe so it will be both noisy and smelly while the work is being conducted. This will happen on the 5th floor of the Isché Library in the corner closest to Bolivar and Gravier. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Board Vitals technical difficulties continue, 2/1/21

We are still experiencing some technical difficulties with our Board Vitals subscription. It seems that most of the issues are with relatively new accounts.

We have contacted support for assistance and will update the blog when the issue has been resolved. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

5th Floor Noise and Relocation of Journals

There is a plumbing issue on the 5th Floor of the Library. As a result of the measures that will need to be taken to fix the problem, there will be a lot of noise and movement on the floor for the foreseeable future.

Journals have been relocated in order to accommodate the necessary demolition and repairs. If you need assistance retrieving a print journal for anything from Journal of Toxicology Toxin Reviews through Journal of Vascular Surgery or Tissue and Cell through Virchows Archiv, please ask Library staff for assistance.

Also, please avoid sitting in the immediate area as it will not be conducive to studying.

All of this has been caused by coffee grounds poured down a sink. The moral of this story, then, is to find more appropriate places to dispose of coffee grounds other than a sink because you never know what it might cause.

February’s Diversity and Inclusivity Book Club Pick: Data Feminism

“Underlying data feminism is a belief in and commitment to co-liberation: the idea that oppressive systems of power harm all of us, that they undermine the quality and validity of our work, and that they hinder us from creating true and lasting social impact with data science.”  Catherine D’Ignazio and Lauren F. Klein, Data Feminism

This month the Diversity and Inclusivity Book Club, hosted by the School of Public Health’s Diversity and Inclusivity Committee, will discuss Data Feminism by Catherine D’Ignazio and Lauren F. Klein as its February read.

The Book Club will discuss Data Feminism on Zoom on Wednesday, February 10th at 12pm. If you’d like to read and take part in the event, the Library provides access to an eBook version through EBSCO, with unlimited users at a time.

For more about the Diversity and Inclusivity Book Club, including information on next month’s Book Club pick and meeting time, email sphdiversity@lsuhsc.edu.
