June Faculty Publications

A new selection of articles have been added to the Faculty Publications display in the Ische Library. These eight articles, as well as all of the articles in our Faculty Publications database, are authored by at least one member of our research community here at LSUHSC-New Orleans. Each month the Library is proud to present copies of eight of these publications in a rotating display of 16. With the currently changes, we’ve decided to post the publications digitally. Check out the display below:

Publications cited in the Faculty Publications database are harvested weekly from a variety of sources, such as PubMed, SCOPUS, and CINAHL, to name a few. In addition to articles they include books, book chapters, papers, editorials, letters to the editor, and meeting abstracts, all authored by at least one member of the LSUHSC-NO community. The database is maintained by Reference Librarian Kathy Kerdolff and will be available to the general public here or via the Library’s webpage. Library Lobby Work Downtown

On the downtown campus, the Library Lobby is having both elevator and wallpaper work done at the moment. Prepare to step carefully as you get off the elevator to access the coffee shop (to the right) or the Isché Library (to the left). Work will continue until it’s complete.

Bolivar Street Elevated Walkway Closure May 14 – May 16

The elevated walkway over Bolivar Street will be closed from 6PM Friday, May 14th to 6PM Sunday, May 16th.

During this time, the Resource Center Building and the Library will be accessible from the 1st floor entrance only.

Please plan your visit accordingly.

Change Login before June 1st, 2021

What’s happening?

NCBI is transitioning to federated account credentials. NCBI-managed credentials are the username and password you set at NCBI — these will be going away. Federated account credentials are those set through eRA Commons, Google, or a university or institutional point of access.

How to add a 3rd-party login option

1. Log into your NCBI account as usual.
   1. Click on your username in the upper right corner to access the NCBI Account Settings page.
   1. In the “Linked accounts” (old heading) section, select “Change”.
   1. In the search box, search for your desired 3rd-party option.
   1. Select the link for your desired option.
   1. Authenticate with the 3rd party.

Read by QxMD changes

The Library will not renew our institutional subscription to Read by QxMD, so you may see reduced functionality starting in June. You will still be able to set subject alerts and share articles, but getting to full text will be slightly more difficult.

If an article is available for free, you will be able to access it with no trouble. However, if a subscription is required to view the full text, you may be asked to log in. Please remember that the Library is a member of the OpenAthens federation, so you will be able to use your LSUHSC-NO e-mail and password to log in to publishers who support that option.

We are still maintaining full access to BrowZine, and it can also be accessed via desktop or mobile applications.

Coffee Service in the Library Commons

Because of construction in the downtown campus Atrium (which begins Wednesday, April 28th), the coffee bar will be moving to the Library Commons, adjacent to the Isché Library. The Coffee service will be open on Monday, May 3rd. Items and services will be limited. Hours are to be determined from 7am to 2pm each weekday as staffing allows.

The coffee bar operated previously from July 15, 2009 through March 28, 2013. It was not financially sustainable.

Libraries sponsor “Picture A Scientist” virtual screening

The Libraries are happy to offer a virtual screening of the film “Picture A Scientist” focusing on the challenges of minorities and women in the sciences. You can find out more information about it at https://www.pictureascientist.com.

The film will be available to view online at any time from Friday, April 30, 2021, through Sunday, May 2, 2021.

You will need to register at https://forms.office.com/r/tcGKjHG5JD to view the film. Once registered, you will receive another message with the link and login information to watch the movie online at any time you choose during the viewing window.

DEI Book Club Author Chat: Pam Fessler Discussing “Carville’s Cure: Leprosy, Stigma, and the Fight for Justice”

This month the Diversity and Inclusivity Book Club, hosted by the School of Public Health’s Diversity and Inclusivity Committee, will discuss Carville’s Cure: Leprosy, Stigma, and the Fight for Justice by Pam Fessler as its May read.

In a special event, the Book Club will discuss Carville’s Cure on Zoom with Pam Fessler as a special guest on Wednesday, May 5th at 12pm. To attend, please register on Zoom. If you’d like to read and take part in the event, the Library has purchased a physical copy of the book, which is available for checkout.

Saturday Street Closures

On Saturday, April 17^th, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Bolivar Street will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic between Tulane Avenue & Perdido Street. In addition, Gravier Street will also be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic between S. Roman Street & S. Prieur Street.

This will mean that the first floor entrance at the front of the Resource Center Building will be inaccessible for the majority of the Library’s Saturday hours.

If you plan on studying at the Library this Saturday, please be aware that you’ll need to make accommodations to avoid these street closures.

April’s Diversity and Inclusivity Book Club Pick

This month the Diversity and Inclusivity Book Club, hosted by the School of Public Health’s Diversity and Inclusivity Committee, will discuss Tales of Two Planets: Stories of Climate Change and Inequality in a Divided World edited by John Freeman as its April read.

The Book Club will discuss Tales of Two Planets on Zoom on Wednesday, April 14th at 12pm. If you’d like to read and take part in the event, the Library provides access to an eBook version through EBSCO, with a limit of one user at a time.
