Loss of the Dean of the School of Dentistry

From the Chancellor this morning:

It is with tremendous sadness that I inform you of the sudden passing of Henry Gremillion, DDS, MAGD, Dean of our School of Dentistry. Henry, a Louisiana native and 1977 graduate of the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry, came home to lead his alma mater in 2008. He was the sixth dean since the founding of the dental school and the only LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry alumnus who held the position.

Henry was a visionary leader on the local, state and national levels. He shepherded to completion the first new permanent building on the Dental School campus since the school was originally constructed. The $31 million, 64,899 square foot structure now named the Allen A. Copping, DDS Advanced Clinical Care and Research Building opened in 2018. Thanks to Henry’s leadership guiding their extensive renovation, students now hone their skills in some the most advanced preclinical labs in the country.

Henry led the state’s only School of Dentistry and the only one in the country with degree programs in dentistry, dental hygiene and dental laboratory technology.

His many honors include LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry Alumnus of Year in 2001, the school’s highest alumnus award, and the University of Florida College of Dentistry Teacher of the Year in 2002 and 2007. A beloved educator, the Florida Dental Association honored him as the Florida Dental Educator of the Year in 2002 and 2006. Henry received the Louisiana Academy of General Dentistry Career Service Award in 2003. He was selected as a 2007 Distinguished Professor by the University of Florida Blue Key Society. In 2008, the American Academy of General Dentistry honored Dr. Gremillion with the prestigious Theodore V. Weclew award for contributions to the education of general dentists. In 2009, the Dawson Academy honored him with its Career Service Award. In 2010, he received the American Academy of Orofacial Pain Service Award, and in 2015, the Pierre Fauchard Gold Medal. He was a member of the American Dental Association, Louisiana Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Fraternity, American Academy of Orofacial Pain, American Pain Society, International Association for the Study of Pain, American Equilibration Society, American Association for Dental Research and International Association for Dental Research.

You can read more about Henry in this story written when he was elected Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Dental Education Association — the sole national organization representing academic dentistry.

Despite his national stature, Henry easily related to people from all walks of life. Students, faculty, patients, members of the community, elected officials, local, state and national leaders all found him approachable, respectful, caring, engaged and down to earth.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Please keep his family, as well as his Dental School and Health Sciences Center colleagues in your thoughts and prayers as they cope with this inestimable loss.

A new selection of articles have been added to the Faculty Publications display in the Ische Library. These eight articles, as well as all of the articles in our Faculty Publications database, are authored by at least one member of our research community here at LSUHSC-New Orleans. Check out the display below:

Publications cited in the Faculty Publications database are harvested weekly from a variety of sources, such as PubMedSCOPUS, and CINAHL, to name a few. In addition to articles they include books, book chapters, papers, editorials, letters to the editor, and meeting abstracts, all authored by at least one member of the LSUHSC-NO community. The database is maintained by Reference Librarian Kathy Kerdolff and is available to the general public here or via the Library’s webpage. Easter Hours

How is it Easter time already?

The Isché Library will be closed on Friday, April 10th in addition to our already reduced hours.

The Libraries will re-open on Monday, April 13th at 8am.

Tips for off campus access to online resources

Many publishers are adding alternatives to access online resources, and we just want to provide a few tips to help you figure all of this out:

  • To log into electronic resources off campus, you can use either your LSU Health New Orleans full e-mail address and password or a Library barcode and PIN
  • All links to resources on the Library’s site are formatted to ask you to log in when needed; this is the preferred way to get to all of our resources
  • Many of our online resources support logging in directly at the site using OpenAthens; a list of OpenAthens-native resources is available here
  • Some publishers are now offering alternate ways to verify you have access to their content
    • If you are asked to select a federation to find an institution please remember we are part of the OpenAthens Federation
      • We are listed as LSU Health Sciences Center Library with OpenAthens
  • If you are searching for articles, LibKey Nomad is a tremendous help to get you to both subscribed and free articles
    • It works with many publishers’ sites and makes getting to articles from PubMed very easy
    • It will ask you to log in when you needed to access articles
    • More information can be found on the LibKey Nomad section of our BrowZine LibGuide

We are here to help you navigate the often confusing world of electronic resources, so don’t hesitate to contact us if you need any help!

New EBooks Available

Due to current restrictions and recommendations, we are doing our best to add online access to our print books wherever possible.  In some instances we have acquired the newer editions, as older editions were not available or just too out of date.

Recently added titles:

Unfortunately, many publishers do not sell their online books to institutions and libraries, preferring students and instructors coordinate access directly through them. Some of those ebooks are available for sale through ebook sellers such as RedShelf and VitalSource, both of which are offering special access during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Please let us know if there is something in particular that you need us to try to acquire, and we will research the availability for institutional access.  More information and contact information can be found here: https://www.lsuhsc.edu/library/services/colldev.aspx.

Libraries Reducing Hours Again

The Libraries are reducing hours again in response to the COVID-19 threat in the city of New Orleans.

The Ische Library will be open from 8am to 6pm Monday through Friday.

The Dental Library will be open on Mondays and Wednesdays only from 8am to 12noon.

The Library staff is available via Chat, Email or Telephone.

Trial access to online resources

McGraw-Hill (AccessMedicine) and Ovid/LWW (LWW Health Library) have offered to open up extended trial access to some of their resources during the COVID-19 outbreak.

We created a LibGuide to keep track of these: https://libguides.lsuhsc.edu/trial. We will add more resources as they become available.

McGraw-Hill additional access is through June 1st. Those resources are AccessBiomedical Science, Cardiology, Pediatrics, Physiotherapy, and F.A. Davis PT collection (part of AccessPhysiotherapy).

Ovid/LWW additional access is through May 19th. Those resources are 5-MinuteConsult, Acland’s Video Atlas of Human Anatomy, Bates Visual Guide to Physical Examination, LWW Health Library Clerkship/Clinical Rotations, LWW Health Library Exercise Science, LWW Health Library PA Rotations/Specialties.

Citrix and Library resources

If you are attempting to use any Library resources such as ebooks, journals, or databases, and have gone in through Citrix, you may wonder why you are are being asked to pay or you’re seeing something saying you need a subscription.

Even though you are in Citrix, you may still have to prove to publishers that you have permission to access the resources. Unfortunately, Citrix doesn’t always send that information along, so it’s important you use a link from the Library’s site or create one in order to guarantee you can get to what you should.

One key thing to look for is whether the link you’re following has “ezproxy.lsuhsc.edu” anywhere. If it does, then you’re good to go! If it does not, you may not be able to get to the resource you need. You can fix this, however, by running the link to the resource you need through our magical off campus link maker available here: https://libguides.lsuhsc.edu/openathens/offcampuslink. Then follow these instructions:
