LSUHealthNO Nursing Named a Stellar School – Again

For the second time, the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) has designated LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing as a Stellar School. The School is one of only four in the country whose designations were renewed and the only one in Louisiana to have twice earned the recognition. The designation is for five years. The award was presented April 8, 2017, at the NSNA Annual Conference in Dallas.

Since 2009, the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) Stellar School Chapter Recognition Program has recognized NSNA school chapters that demonstrate ongoing involvement in NSNA, including a strong commitment to shared governance and professional development of their students and faculty. The awards are open to official NSNA school chapters that have maintained constituency status for the previous five years and meet specific criteria for recognition, including community service, mentoring and professional role models, leadership recognition and representation on campus committees, among others.

“Achieving the National Student Nurses Association’s designation as a Stellar Nursing School for the second time is an indication of our commitment to preparing nursing students to be leaders of the nursing profession,” notes Demetrius Porche, DNS, APRN, LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing Dean and Professor. “This designation was achieved through our ongoing involvement as leaders in student nursing organizations at the state and national level along with our nursing school’s value on nursing students’ participation in all aspects of our nursing school.”

The mission of LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing is to provide local, national, and international leadership in the education of professional nurses to function as generalists, advanced practitioners, educators, scholars, and researchers who shape the delivery of nursing practice and education. It is the only nursing school within an academic health sciences center in the State of Louisiana.

Founded in 1952, NSNA is a nonprofit organization for students enrolled in associate, baccalaureate, diploma, and generic graduate nursing programs. It is dedicated to fostering the professional development of nursing students. The organization has 60,000 members in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
