This is a faculty position within library administration.

The person in this position is responsible for assisting the library’s writing and editing consulting service, in addition to other duties related to scholarly publishing and presentation for Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center – Shreveport (LSUHSC-S) Library.

This person must have good management, communication, and organizational skills, as well as a strong ability to think critically. A high level of technical computer skills is also required.  This person must be able to work independently and to establish priorities for the ongoing work of the library. 

This position is supervised directly by the Executive Director of the LSUHSC-S Library.

Regular attendance is required to perform the functions of this position.

Incumbent will maintain a customer-oriented awareness in acknowledging and responding to needs as they occur that customer satisfaction is met at all times.

Essential Position Functions & Duties

90%     Writing and Publishing

  • Serves as a writing consultant for students, faculty, residents, and staff, delivering context-appropriate feedback and editing.
  • Reviews a wide range of document types, including article manuscripts, personal statements, course papers, CVs, grant applications, and other relevant texts.
  • Promotes the library's writing consulting/editing services through virtual consultations, e-mail, and in person.
  • Develops and teaches classes or workshops on scientific and academic writing skills, predatory publishing, plagiarism, and other writing/publishing-related topics.
  • Develops and teaches classes or workshops on creative writing to enhance student self ­expression for residency applications and other projects.
  • Works with the Writing & Publishing Librarian in promoting scholarly communication practices, such as author rights, open access, avoiding plagiarism, and respecting copyrights.
  • Works with Writing & Publishing Librarian on projects tracking the institution's research output.
  • Works with faculty, staff, and students to develop strategies to maximize research impact and identify appropriate, reputable publishing opportunities.
  • May develop and teach classes to improve presentation and oral communication skills.
  • Serves as a point of contact for copyright and plagiarism questions.
  • Works with other personnel on relevant student success initiatives.
  • May serve as designee from library administration about statewide initiatives for textbook affordability and open education resources (OER).
  • Successfully completes relevant continuing education opportunities.

5%       Faculty Duties

  • Joins and/or participates in professional associations which support academic writing, scholarly publishing, scientific editing, and related fields.
  • Conducts occasional research and publishes or presents results at professional association meetings.
  • Writes book reviews, editorials, book chapters, or other non-research publications.
  • Participates in relevant continuing education opportunities, which may be offered in various locations and through different modalities, as well as by a variety of sponsors.
  • Occasionally pursues relevant grant, scholarship, and funding opportunities.

Non-Essential Position Functions & Duties

5%       Marginal Functions

  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Applicant must meet one of the following qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in English, Technical Writing, or a closely-related field that emphasizes writing
  • Masters Degree from an ALA-accredited library science program with minimum 1 year experience teaching writing at the college level
  • Masters Degree or higher in a scientific field (biology, chemistry, physics) and minimum 1 year successful teaching writing at the college level or employed as a technical writer or editor.
  • Classroom or online teaching experience at the college level.
  • Experience in a college writing center.
  • Experience with a variety of students in higher education (undergraduate through doctoral/professional degree students).
  • Comfort editing documents with a variety of style guides.
  • Experience with publishing or journalism.
  • Experience reviewing lengthy written works, such as book manuscripts and training manuals.
  • Experience with common academic software (Word, EndNote or similar citation managers, etc).
  • Membership in relevant associations, such as American Medical Writers Association or Board of Editors in the Life Sciences

Salary Range: $55,000
