Current/Active Phishing Attacks

We will post here when there is a current phishing threat that you should be aware of.

About and How to Report Phishing

Phishing is a type of cyberattack where attackers use deceptive emails, messages, or websites to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords, and other sensitive information. These attacks often appear to come from legitimate sources, such as trusted companies or colleagues, making them difficult to detect.

If you aren't sure if a message is Phishing, please contact your local IT Support team via the IT Service Desk or Call the Help Desk.

If you recieve a phishing email you should use the "Report" functionality in Outlook.

Phishing Attack Examples

The following are examples of actual phishing emails received by LSUHSC users, along with tips on how to identify them as phishing attempts.

Example 1:

  1. The sender not only isn't part of the LSUSC domain, the sender's address is Australian (hence the '.au').  This should immediately cause suspicion.

  2. The email's subject has odd punctuation.  Why would there be a comma after a set of brackets and a period at the end?  This formatting appears a bit strange.

  3. Same as above - the punctuation is a bit off including a period in the link itself.  Also, notice how the comma at the end is in black rather than red like the rest of the text.

Example 2:

  1. There aren't any recipients shown.  This likely means that the sender sent this to everyone via BCC.  Any time you don't see your LSUHSC address (or a distribution list that you may be a member of) listed in the To or CC fields, this should raise your suspicion.

  2. Not only is the link in a different font than 'Click here', the text that follows the link is bolded while 'Click here' is not bolded.

  3. The word 'Orleans' isn't capitalized.
